Karen Hughes, the woman known as the missing link between Barbara and Laura Bush, has finished up her international chores, and is shuffling on back to Texas to spend the holiday season at her Austin, Texas dachshund farm.
Ms. Hughes, who served as the Bush emissary in charge of upgrading the image of the United States in the Moslem world, is seen as one of the great kind-of-success stories of the Bush Administration.
"We gave her what seemed to be an impossible job," said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, "and by God, she wasn't able to do it. But that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve our praise for giving it the old college try."
Although Ms. Hughes is relinquishing all formal duties as of December, she will still retain an important position on the President's speed dial.
